The human dream of talking to computers in natural language is not new. Scientific fiction books and movies, which live in our imaginary, present several examples of it. On the other hand, voice recognition and speech synthesis technologies have reached accuracy and reliance enough to be used in large scale only in the beginning of the 21st century, bringing to the surface the possibility of finally making our dreams of talking to computers come true, and more, not only to one computer at a time but to several ones in network.
In this context, and aspiring to create an experiment where people could talk to the Web (call in US: (800) 289.5570 from any telephone and dial the PIN number 9991421055) and insert themselves in it through their voices, it was created the Voice Mosaic (www.voicemosaic.com.br) project.
The work is a web-art that converges speech and image into a visual/aural mosaic on the Web that was first launched in July/2004, counting today with 300 tiles (Jan/2006). The tiles in the mosaic are created by the chosen colors and recorded voices of people who interact with the work by phone, from any place in the globe, through speech synthesis and voice recognition – natural language processing. The mosaic is seen/heard on the Web, where there are several ways of interaction available.
Interactions can happen in three distinct languages in order to encourage global participation.
Several dualities, which do not oppose each other, but instead mix and complete each other, are put together in the work, such as – aural/visual, simple/complex, art/science, old/new, low-tech/high-tech, time/space, man/computer, individual/community, passive/active, causality/chance, among others. Their dialogue and mix try to raise questions to help increasing our awareness about boundary dissolutions, hybridizations, convergences, and trans-disciplinary activities that more and more rule our world.

Desripció tècnica
|
The work uses VoiceXML and Voice gateways with speech synthesis and voice recognition technologies. This is a new technology and the Voice Mosaic project uses it in a creative way.
I have developed the voice interface application in VoiceXML, which is rendered by a voice gateway. Then, I integrated it with a data base (Access), and the front end on the web developing and ASP application with Flash. The innovative part is the development of a voice interface with speech synthesis and voice recognition accessed by phone and its integration with the Web applications (ASP and Flash) in real time on the Web.
As the project was developed in 3 languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish) to allow interaction from several parts of the Globe, it has to use 2 voice gateways – one in Brazil (to allow dialogs in Portuguese) and another one in US (to allow dialogs in English and Spanish). In Brazil I am using LocaVoz (www.locavoz.com.br) and in US I am using Voxeo (www.voxeo.com) free evaluation voice gateway services.
The user will be able to make a phone call and talk freely with a voice interface, choosing a color and recording message. After hanging up, s/he will be able to see his/her tile being created along with a beep on the visual mosaic. The tile will be created using the color the user chose and when clicked it will play the message the user recorded on the phone call.
After that, the user can hear his/her tile or interact with any other tile in the mosaic by clicking on them and hearing their recorded messages.
Besides that, s/he can search tiles by phone areas or phone numbers that had generated them, or s/he can navigate in several modes (static, lights, or tracks) to experience the work in different visual/conceptual ways.
The Voice Mosaic Project has place for 1600 tiles, or in other words, for 1600 participations. After that, it gets complete and another version of the Voice Mosaic is launched.
